Pottery Lab is dedicated to advancing and revitalizing Hausa pottery traditions. By combining research, apprenticeship, and community practice, the Lab preserves ancient techniques, empowers artisans, and builds a local ceramics ecosystem rooted in heritage.

A traditional evolution

We undertake rigorous research and documentation of Hausa ceramic heritage; tracing clay sources, glazes, firing methods, and historical motifs to preserve and revive this ancestral knowledge. Simultaneously, we run training programs, such as workshops, master-apprentice engagements, and artist residencies, to empower emerging potters with both time-honored and contemporary techniques.

Our community workshops welcome everyone — from local residents and schoolchildren to tourists, to shape clay, explore form, and connect with tradition firsthand. Through exhibitions and cultural events, we bring these creations to public spaces, partnering with museums and festivals to showcase both traditional and experimental ceramic works. At the same time, we foster innovation projects that encourage potters to blend heritage forms with modern design, ensuring that Hausa pottery evolves in relevance while honoring its roots.
